What is SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It is the actual work that needs to be done on-site so that the content matches the algorithm of the search engine as much as possible. The closer the on-site optimization to the search engines algorithm, the higher up in the rankings the site gets. On-site optimization is just one of the many things that need to be done to gain top 10 rankings though.

What is SEM?

SEO stands for Search Engine Marketing. It is the offsite marketing such as inbound link building by writing articles, participating in blogs and forums, getting paid IBL's, trading links, etc..

While your website needs to be optimized, your SEM campaign needs to be equally impressive to gain top 10 results in Google, Yahoo, MSN and the other big dogs.

What is Link Popularity?

Link Popularity is the AMOUNT of links you have pointing to your website from another website. What matters most with link popularity is the relevancy of the website linking to yours and the anchor text used in the link pointing to your website.

What is Anchor Text?

Anchor Text is the text used in the actual link that you see. For example:
<a href="http://www.RankRover.com">Click Here</a> for SEO

<--- This is bad because Click Here is the anchor text. Seeing that we are not trying to be ranked for the term "Click Here" we do not use that as anchor text. We use:

<a href="http://www.RankRover.com">Search Engine Optimization Company</a>

<-- This is good because we are interested in being ranked for "Search Engine Optimization Company".

What are Inbound Links?

Inbound Links are the links that point to you from other websites. Having Inbound Links rather than Reciprocal Links are much better for your websites ranking. It is believed that if another relevant website links to yours without a Reciprocal Link back then your site must be worth something.

What are Reciprocal Links?

Reciprocal Links are links that you trade with other websites. This is a way of inflating the amount of Inbound Links to your site but Reciprocal Links are less valuable because the site owners traded the links in order to manipulate the Serps. It is still good practice to trade links with websites that have a high PageRank™ because it still benefits your website to have that Inbound Link from a popular website. Not only can it help with your rankings but you might get a visitor who was referred from the other websites link to you.

What is Google PageRank™?

Google PageRank™ as Google itself explains "PageRank performs an objective measurement of the importance of web pages by solving an equation of more than 500 million variables and 2 billion terms. Instead of counting direct links, PageRank interprets a link from Page A to Page B as a vote for Page B by Page A. PageRank then assesses a page's importance by the number of votes it receives." For more information visit Google.

What are FFA Pages?

FFA stands for Free-For-All. These pages are filled with links that most humans never see. The links usually get there by a search engine submission software. The technique used to be used as a way to inflate Inbound Links but over the years search engines have gotten smarter and most of them just ignore links from FFA Pages. The thing you want to avoid though is linking TO the FFA Page from your website. This can actually get your website banned.

What are Serps?

Serps stands for Search Engine Results Pages. These are the pages that come up when you perform a search. For a business to succeed or any website for that matter, it is vital that your website be at least in the top 20 listings. Most people will not go any further when searching for something. The preference however is to be listed in the top 10.

What are SmartPages, Doorway Pages, Gateway Pages, Lead-in Pages, etc.?

SmartPages as they are currently called are pages that are optimized for a specific keyword or keyphrase. Once the SmartPage is visited by a human, they are instantly redirected to the actual website. The idea behind them is to make the search engine believe that the SmartPage is actually part of the website which is rich in keywords. The use of SmartPages must be discrete and you better be experienced if you are using them. Beginners tend to use them incorrectly and get their website banned in the process. Search Engines want to bring visitors relevant results and SmartPages work against this in many ways because the content of the SmartPage is not what the human will actually see.

Why is my website banned?

If your website has been banned, chances are you violated their terms of use. For many this means that you have been caught spamming. Now a days anything can be considered spamming. Small text which you may have on your website might be considered spam. Duplicate websites with the exact same or slightly different content are considered spam. SmartPages are considered spam so make sure you know what you are doing when using them. You should only use them when clients request to be ranked for words and they do not want to make changes to their website. Make sure they understand what is involved. If anything a search engine will most likely ignore the SmartPages if detected instead of banning the entire domain. Remember, the use of SmartPages are considered SPAM and unethical. If you do decide to use them please only use them to rank relevant content. It is always annoying when you do a search for something innocent and end up with a porn site in the top 10 results. Beware of SEO's that will do this for you.

How do I get unbanned?

If your website has been banned from a search engine it is usually because not only have you violated their terms of use policy by spamming but you have been caught. If you want to get unbanned make sure you made the needed changes to your website so it is 100% spam free and contact the search engine. Tell them that you have recently redone the website and had no knowledge that the website was spamming. Chances are, if you have removed the spam and the search engine can verify it, you will be unbanned and once again able to climb up the ladder.

Why do I have a ton of traffic and no sales?

This could be for a couple of reasons. One reason may be because your website does not have enough of or the right type of content needed in order to make the sale. Another reason may be because your website is being visited mostly by search engine spiders due to a recent website submission.

There are some webmasters who believe that search engines such as Google download your websites traffic logs to determine if the site is popular or not. There is a software program called "Ranking Booster" which allows webmasters to send "Fake Traffic" to a website from different ip addresses. If your website is indexed by Alexa, this will improve your traffic ranking with them as well.
